You Get 50 Claps! And You Get 50 Claps! Everyone on Medium Gets 50 Claps!
So what if claps don’t matter as much as they used to? Give them anyway.
Allow me to confess something to you, dear reader.
I used to be kind of…well, let’s just say I was taking this whole clap thing a bit too seriously here on Medium.
I know what you’re thinking. Claps don’t matter anymore, Melissa. At least not as much as they used to.
But hear me out on this.
(Please, I beg of you, read just a little bit longer. I just had a car repair bill that was $800 and I really need the pennies that will be made from this post.)
On October 22, when Medium changed their criteria for how earnings are calculated and our collective heads exploded, we learned that claps would no longer be one of the defining factors. They would still be relevant, but they wouldn’t be as important.
When I first joined Medium back in May, I gave 50 claps to every article I read (once I learned that was possible, that is). Then I became much more judicious and created my own personal rating scale for how I award claps.
