How to Embarrass Your Teenager During a College Visit

My 10 time-tested ways that you, too, can become The Most Annoying Parent Ever.

Parents of college-bound high school students (or those who have been there and survived) know this one undeniable fact:

You will never be more embarrassing in the eyes of your beloved child than during The College Visit.

I should know. As I write this, our family is in the thick of college application season times two with our almost 18 year-old twins who have informed me that I am The Most Annoying Parent on every campus visit we’ve conducted.

Because I think every parent should strive for such an esteemed honor, I thought I would share my 10 tips on how you, too, should behave on a college visit so you can be the target of constant eye-rolls and dramatic sighs from your offspring.

  1. Make enthusiastic comments such as, “I’m going to move in here!” or “We never had dining halls/dorm rooms/fitness centers/fill-in-the-blank with any other multi-million dollar amenity like this back in the day.” Bonus points for adding the year you graduated and/or saying this in a loud enough voice to make another parent nearby laugh or nod their head.
  2. If it’s raining and you only have one umbrella, hold it…
