Hello, Medium. Goodbye, Facebook.

Well, not quite. But in 11 days, Medium has become life-changing.

No, this isn’t another one of those “I’ve deleted Facebook and my life is so much more blissful and fulfilling!” posts.

Quite the opposite, actually. Despite all of its issues, there’s a part of me that still likes Facebook.

(See what I did there? Likes Facebook? Heh.)

I love that Facebook allows me to be in daily contact with far-flung relatives several times removed, people who never spoke to me in high school but who have turned out to be rather nice adults, and with women who share the same rare condition as me. All that has been wonderful and life-changing.

But as we all know, Facebook can be a cesspool. Most days, it’s not a fun place to be. The discourse over there can turn emotional and toxic in a nanosecond. It’s a microcosm of where we — the United States — are as a country, divided and angry. I’ve unfriended and been unfriended over the 2016 presidential election and its horrifically surreal aftermath. Those losses are bittersweet.

Still, even knowing all this, I find myself spending way too much time on Facebook and — short of deleting my account altogether, which I don’t want to do — not being able to reign myself in.
